The lab

The full ad is offline now, so the task wording above comes from your own cover letter, which mirrored it. If you saved the ad text anywhere, read it once more on Thursday.

60 seconds, in German

Your intro (“Erzählen Sie etwas über sich”)

Say it out loud 3–4 times. Don't memorize word for word; keep the order: degree → lab work → data → why this lab.

Sprechvorlage

What they need vs. what you bring

Fit and gaps

Their areaYouYour proof
DurchflusszytometrieHands-onSurface staining with isotype controls and MFI analysis for TROP2 and other markers. Be honest that this was research flow on cell lines, not multicolor immunophenotyping of patient samples.
Data evaluation & plausibilityStrongPython (pandas/NumPy), MesoLab Analytics (4PL fits with confidence intervals), IC50 work, figures for a peer-reviewed paper.
Documentation & QMResearch levelSOP-based work and complete lab protocols. GLP/GMP basics from your studies. No hands-on RiliBÄK or ISO 15189 work yet.
Molecular genetics (qPCR, dPCR, NGS)NewYou named this openly in your letter. You know the principles; the lab routine is what you would learn.
CytomorphologyNewAlso named in your letter. Microscopy and cell counting from cell culture are the closest you have.
Clinical trialsAdjacentYour project was translational (patient-relevant drug combinations), and your paper deals with treatment response.

How to talk about the gaps: say it once, calmly, then go straight to how you learn. Don't apologize twice.

Questions they will probably ask

Why diagnostics instead of research?

Was wissen Sie über unser Labor? What do you know about us?

Only say this if you're comfortable explaining MRD in one sentence (see the refresher).

Erklären Sie uns Ihre Durchflusszytometrie-Erfahrung genauer.Walk us through your flow cytometry work.

Have one concrete run ready, step by step: harvest cells → count → stain with antibody and isotype control → wash → acquire → gate (FSC/SSC, single cells, live cells) → compare MFI to isotype. Mention controls and why you used them.

Was tun Sie?A result looks implausible. What do you do?

This is the core of the job (“plausibilisieren”), so answer in this order: pre-analytics, analytics, prior results, repeat, escalate, document.

Wie stellen Sie Qualität in Ihrer Arbeit sicher? How do you make sure your work is reliable?

Tell us about a mistake or a failed experiment.

Pick one real example from Essen: a blot or assay that failed, how you found the cause, and what you changed so it didn't happen again. Keep it short and end with the lesson. Choose the example before Friday.

Wie arbeiten Sie im Team / mit Ärztinnen und Ärzten?Teamwork, working with physicians.

Use the Essen lab: you planned experiments with your supervisor (Dr. Hegedüs), shared results with the group, and built MesoLab for the group's use. That last point shows you build things that help colleagues.

Wann können Sie anfangen? Ziehen Sie nach Kiel?Start date and moving to Kiel.

Decide your answer before Friday. Kiel is far from NRW, so they will want to know you'll actually move.

Your profile says you're also studying Political Science in Münster. If that comes up, have one honest sentence ready about how it fits with a full-time job (for example, that the job comes first).

Ihre Gehaltsvorstellung?Salary expectations.

Unlikely in a first 30-minute round. UKSH pays by its collective agreement, so you can say: “Ich orientiere mich an der tariflichen Eingruppierung für die Stelle.” Don't name a number first.

Science refresher

They won't test you like an exam, but one or two technical questions are likely. Knowing these terms shows you prepared for this lab.

MRD in one breath

  • MRD = leukemia cells left after therapy, below what a microscope can see.
  • Measured as a ratio, e.g. 1 leukemic cell in 10⁴ (flow) to 10⁵–10⁶ (PCR/NGS).
  • Guides treatment: MRD-negative patients may need less therapy; MRD-positive may need more or a transplant.

Flow cytometry

  • Multicolor panels (EuroFlow uses standardized 8-color tubes); compensation corrects spectral overlap.
  • Gating: FSC/SSC → singlets → CD45/SSC → lineage markers.
  • B-ALL markers: CD19, CD10, CD34, CD20, CD38, CD45. T-ALL: cytoplasmic CD3, CD7.
  • CLL: CD19⁺ CD5⁺ CD23⁺, weak CD20, light chain restriction (κ or λ).
  • Sample: EDTA or heparin blood/bone marrow, processed quickly (usually within 24–48 h).

Molecular genetics

  • Each B/T-cell clone has a unique IG/TR gene rearrangement, which works as a patient-specific marker.
  • ASO-qPCR: patient-specific primers, quantified against a dilution of the diagnostic sample (EuroMRD guidelines).
  • Digital PCR: absolute quantification without a standard curve.
  • NGS: finds and tracks clonal rearrangements with high sensitivity.
  • Fusion transcripts like BCR::ABL1 are monitored by qPCR, reported on the International Scale.

Cytomorphology

  • Blood and bone marrow smears stained with Pappenheim (May-Grünwald-Giemsa).
  • Blast count, cell differentiation, cytochemistry (e.g. MPO, esterase).
  • Your connection: you know cell morphology from culture and counting.

Quality in a medical lab

  • RiliBÄK: German rules for internal QC (control samples each run) and external QC (Ringversuche, i.e. proficiency testing).
  • ISO 15189: the accreditation standard for medical labs. UKSH labs are accredited under it.
  • Levey-Jennings charts and Westgard rules flag drifting controls.

Phase model

  • Präanalytik: ordering, sampling, transport, sample ID. Most errors happen here.
  • Analytik: the measurement plus controls.
  • Postanalytik: plausibility check, technical validation, report, archiving.
Ask 2–3 at the end

Your questions for them

Question 3 is your strongest. It points straight at your Python and analysis skills.
